Omarchy vs Arch vs Omakub: Which Should You Pick in 2026?
Compare Omarchy, vanilla Arch + Hyprland, and Omakub (Ubuntu/GNOME). Install, workflow, updates, gaming, and who each suits.
Three DHH-adjacent paths, three philosophies. Pick by how much control you want.
TL;DR
| Omarchy | Vanilla Arch + Hyprland | Omakub | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | Arch + Hyprland + Quickshell | Arch (you build) | Ubuntu 24.04 + GNOME |
| Install | ISO โ wipe disk (or manual overlay) | archinstall manual |
curl bootstrap on Ubuntu |
| Workflow | Tiling, Super driven, terminal-first |
Whatever you configure | GNOME + curated CLI |
| Updates | Rolling, Snapper+ Limine rollback | Rolling, you manage | LTS point releases |
| Best for | Keyboard devotees who want Arch without setup debt | Tinkerers wanting total control | Ubuntu users wanting polish without Arch |
Architecture
Omarchy = complete distribution. Ships as ISO with Btrfs+Snapper+Limine, Hyprland Lua config layers, omarchy CLI, curated apps, themes. Rolling but snapshot-safe.
Arch = DIY. You run archinstall, pick HyDE/JaKooLit/Caelestia/ML4W dotfiles, or wire Hyprland yourself. Maximum control, maximum time.
Omakub = Ubuntu configuration layer. On a fresh Ubuntu, wget -qO- https://omakub.org/install | bash adds Alacritty/Neovim/GNOME tweaks/Starship. Familiar GNOME if tiling scares you.
Workflow difference
Omarchy rewards Super+Space launcher, Super+Enter term, workspaces 1-0, no minimize. Omakub keeps GNOME overview, dock, mouse-friendly. Arch depends on chosen dotfiles.
If you live in Neovim + tmux + tiling, Omarchyโs tiling wins. If you live in VS Code + mouse + 1Password/GNOME integrations, Omakubโs GNOME is softer landing.
Stability & troubleshooting
- Omarchy: Arch repos + AUR via
yay/paru, but everypacman -Syuauto-snapshots. Bad update โ reboot Limine snapshot. Discuss in Discord #omarchy-help. - Arch: Same repos, but you write your own snapshots and recovery.
- Omakub: Ubuntu LTS โ fewer breakages, but older packages. PPAs bridge gaps.
Community: Arch wiki is largest; Omarchy Discord is very active; Omakub GitHub discussions smaller.
Gaming & hardware
All three can run Steam/Proton, but Omarchyโs Hyprland needs gamescope/SDL_VIDEODRIVER tweaks (see Gaming guide). Omakubโs X11/GNOME is plug-and-play for games; Arch depends on your compositor.
NVIDIA on Omarchy needs nvidia-dkms + Hyprland env sync (see NVIDIA guide). Omakubโs Ubuntu driver tool ubuntu-drivers autoinstall is easier.
Who should pick what?
Pick Omarchy if: you want Arch + Hyprland without 10h setup, you like keyboard tiling and an omarchy CLI that agents can drive.
Pick Arch if: you want to choose every package, you already have a Hyprland dotfile you love, you want to avoid opinion.
Pick Omakub if: you need Ubuntu for work/1Password/Zoom compatibility or you are new to Linux and GNOME feels safer.
You can try Omarchy in VM first (Boxy: use XWAYLAND_NO_GLAMOR=1 fix), while Omakub can be tested on existing Ubuntu.
